More than 7,300 respondents have spoken, and workplace flexibility is make-or-break for talent attraction and retention. In the 2019 FlexJobs Annual Survey, 30 percent of workers reported that they have left a job because it did not offer flexibility, and 16 percent were currently hunting for a job because of flexibility issues. Furthermore, 14 percent considered leaving a job but decided to stay despite flexibility issues.
And this plight has gotten worse in recent years: FlexJobs previously found that the percentage of workers who left their jobs because of inflexibility more than doubled between 2014 and 2018.
In this latest report, the company listed the top reasons workers are seeking flexible work: Work-life balance (75 percent), family (45 percent), time savings (42 percent), commute stress (41 percent), avoiding office politics and distractions (33 percent), travel (29 percent), cost savings (25 percent), being a pet owner (24 percent), having caregiving opportunities (18 percent), and living in a bad local job market (15 percent).
And when it comes to evaluating job prospects, flexible work options rank as a more important factor than many other factors we all consider to be must-haves—e.g. meaningful work, company reputation, health insurance, company culture, career progression, 401(k)/retirement options, and vacation time. The only two factors ranking above flexible work options are work-life balance (which flex can help) and salary.
The FlexJobs survey offers even more proof that the flexible future is at hand: A whopping 97 percent of respondents reported that they were interested in becoming a flexible worker in the long-term.
Our research echoes these findings: We found that 96 percent of workers need some form of flexibility at work, that employees without access to flex are twice as likely to report being dissatisfied with their job, and that half of employees would leave their job for a more flexible alternative.
